چکیده

A systematic search for 22 GHz H2O megamaser emission is reported for 50 nearby (z <∼ 0.15) FR I galaxies. No detection was obtained, implying that ultraluminous H2O masers (LH2O > 10 3 L ) must be rare in early-type galaxies with FR I radio morphology. Despite higher radio core luminosities the detection rate for our sample is lower than in similar surveys of late-type Seyfert galaxies. This puzzling difference between Seyferts and low-power radio galaxies could be explained in several ways: a) the maser emission is saturated and therefore independent of the radio core luminosity, b) the masers are unsaturated and originate in a thin circumnuclear gas disk, so the ‘seed’ radio continuum would come from the far jet which is relativistically dimmed or c) the amount, kinematics, or the distribution of the molecular gas in the nuclei of Seyferts and radio galaxies is different. Further studies of maser properties may provide clues to the differences between radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN.

Constraints on the presence of water megamaser emission in z ∼ 2 . 5 ultraluminous infrared starburst galaxies

We present Expanded Very Large Array and Arecibo observations of two lensed submm galaxies at z ∼ 2.5, in order to search for redshifted 22.235 GHz water megamaser emission. Both SMM J14011+0252 and SMM J16359+6612 have multi-wavelength characteristics consistent with ongoing starburst activity, as well as CO line emission indicating the presence of warm molecular gas. Our observations do not r...

Discovery of a very luminous megamaser during a radio flare in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348

We report the detection of a new H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348 with the MPIfR 100 m telescope in Effelsberg. With an apparent isotropic luminosity of LH2O ' 420L the maser is the third most luminous maser discovered so far. The detected line is unusually broad (∆v ' 130 km s−1), is redshifted by ∼ 130 km s−1 from the systemic velocity, and is asymmetric with a pronounced blue wi...

A New Water Vapor Megamaser

We report on the detection of a new megamaser, the 31, 3–22, 0 H2O line ( GHz) in Arp 220, using n p 183.310 0 the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30 m telescope. The line is about 350 km s 1 wide with a total luminosity of ∼2.5 # 10 K km s 1 pc. Although OH megamasers were first discovered in this source, no emission is seen in the 61, 6–52, 3 H2O transition ( GHz), a line oth...

Discovery of a luminous water megamaser in the FR II radiogalaxy 3 C 403

We report the first detection of a water megamaser in a radio-loud galaxy, 3C 403. This object has been observed as part of a small sample of FR IIs with evidence of nuclear obscuration. The isotropic luminosity of the maser is ∼1200 L . With a recessional velocity of cz∼ 17680 kms−1 it is the most distant H2O maser so far reported. The line arises from the densest interstellar gas component ev...

A search for extragalactic H2O maser emission towards IRAS galaxies

We report the result of an on-going survey for 22 GHz H2O maser emission towards infrared luminous galaxies. The observed galaxies were selected primarily from the IRAS bright galaxy sample. The survey has resulted in the detection of one new maser. The new maser was discovered towards the [U]LIRG/merger galaxy NGC6240, which contains a LINER nucleus. This is the first detection of an H2O maser...
